Supporting Courts in Ukraine
The role of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is to guarantee the supremacy of the Constitution of Ukraine as the fundamental law of the state. The court came into being in 1996 and its judgements are made by a body of 18 judges who sit in session together.
With support from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Agencia has been working with the Court over the last couple of years. The aims have been to enhance the speed of preparation, and quality of, legal advice assembled for the judges for each case. Early diagnostic work and engagement with key parties was undertaken by Jonathan Radway and Sir Ron De Witt, Principal Consultants with Agencia. The culmination of the work comprised a series of workshops during early March with teams of legal experts, administrators and senior court managers at the court in Kyiv. Jonathan led these workshops, with a focus on expert legal opinion, whilst Andrew Gibson (Agencia's Managing Director) focussed on the benefits of, and mechanisms for, increasing teamworking. Steve Jacobs (Agencia's International Sector Lead), with support from the Court's own staff, facilitated the workshops, which were a new experience for many of the participants.
In parallel with this work, Agencia has also been providing assistance and training to the Supreme Court of Ukraine, again with Foreign Office financial support.
